I ran across this hilarious video (thanks to reddit/r/china) from a Red Sox fan who went out to celebrate the Red Sox World Series win in Shanghai.
While back in America it ended late at night, it was just about noon here in China. And Donnie (his real name) takes to the street to see the crazy shenanigans of the Chinese people based on the Sox win. And nothing brings me back to my old Boston days like his accent…..
The thing I like about this video so much is this is how I feel so often. I’ve been in China for a long time now and things that would be a big deal in America, things that I get excited about, or crazy about or anything, pretty much nobody cares. I remember when Obama won his second term as president I talked about it all day to all my students. While they were mildly interested, they didn’t really get it anyway (elections are hard to understand) and ultimately didn’t care. Big holidays, like Christmas, are pretty shallow here and when tragedy strikes, like the Boston Marathon bombing, people are sympathetic, but they don’t get it.
So rock on Donny, you make the people of Shanghai celebrate with you. Maybe I’ll run into him one day when I go visit. Duck tours forever!
