Street Food of Pingyao

You can’t go far in the tiny ancient city of Pingyao without hearing the street cry of a food vendor, and more often then not, Ryan and I would answer that call.
Pingyao had some of the most unique street food I had never seen before, much of it bread based (our fav) so we had to try it all. From the old man selling cornbread to the costumed singing man selling “rock bread’ (I have no idea of the real name, I just made that up) we ate ourselves round and round the Pingyao walls. Here are some pictures of the best of the street food.

Cornbread got us through our mornings. This old man didn't just make the stuff, but played the guitar when business was slow.

One local specialty noodle called "cat's ears." (No cats were harmed in the making of these noodles.) They tasted a little like gnocchi.

Three different styles of bread/cracker type things. The round bread on the left was empty except for a thin layer of jelly on the inside. The hard triangles on the right were empty, like giant pieces of cereal. The ones in the rear were fried.

Deep fried noodles. The noodles inside had almost the same texture as a root vegetable, like taro or something.

All the nuts shown in the bowls were grinded together to make a powder that was then rolled into each piece of dough.

Then the dough was put in a wok filled with small black shiny rocks. (You can see him holding the dough, about to put it in.)

Then the flat bread sat under the rocks for about 4 or 5 minutes while it slowly cooked and turned brown.

Delish!
