This is a week long series on the different Chinese food I eat on a regular basis. To start at the beginning, click here. I’m not including breakfast because I eat the same thing, yoghurt, every day so I don’t feel that a picture is necessary. I try to describe the ingredients as best I can, so you can get a good idea of what real Chinese food is like, but often times I don’t even know myself!
Lunch: Today’s lunch was at one of our all time favorite off-campus restaurants. It is a real hole-in-the-wall, but has some of the best dumplings we have ever eaten. This is the outside of the restaurant.
The inside is dimly lit and filled with flies but the people are really friendly and the food is good. I broke out of my routine (9 times out of 10 we get the dumplings) and got some noodle soup. When we order noodles we never know if they are going to be served on a plate or in a soup. Today I ended up with soup.
On top is a big fried egg. There is also bok choy and spring onions. The whole thing was very yummy!
On our way back to school we stopped off at our favorite little bakery for a snack. They make delicious cookies and even a decent loaf of bread. The funny thing is they slice the loaves themselves and you never know if you are going to end up with 20 thin slices or 8 huge ones. They also never slice them all the way through so you have to wrestle each slice out of the bag. We didn’t buy bread this time, just some delicious cookies. My favorite taste like a mix between shortbread and oatmeal raisin cookies.
Dinner: It’s not always champagne and caviar here in China!
Yes, China has plenty of pre-processed quick food too. In fact, they consider ramen noodles a legitimate food product here and it is advertised on the sides of buses and on TV all the time. I’m not the biggest fan of ramen, but I do like these cups of powdered mashed potatoes! I had class tonight and didn’t have enough time to eat beforehand so this will keep me from starving to death.
