Okay, this has nothing to do with China, or writing or anything I normally talk about. But I love this guy and I had to share.
His name is Christiaan VanVuuren and he caught tuberculous while traveling in South America. He was initially quarantined, but was released because they thought he had improved. Turns out he only got worse and he has been in the hospital since January 18th. (And he’s still in there now.)
So he’s stuck in a small room, all by himself, coughing up blood and trying to get better. So what does he do? Why, write a song and make a video of course!
He’s made a few videos but this one is my favorite by far. (You can see his other ones on Youtube.) I think pretty much all of us, at some point in our lives, have been bored with a video camera at our disposal. You turn it on, do stupid stuff for an hour and show it to your friends to laugh at. What is awesome about Christiaans video is it is actually good!
And let’s face it, whether he meant to or not, he is definitely become an inspiration for sick people. Sure he has TB, sure he is not allowed to see his friends or family except for a few brief occasional moments (and his visitors have to be suited up with a face mask and gown because they are in danger of catching TB from him) but he’s still making the best of his time. He isn’t wallowing in sickness or getting depressed. He’s being creative and having fun!
