One of my favorite snacks is a piece of pineapple on a stick. I don’t remember if I noticed it when we first got here in September (then again, I stayed away from any un-peelable fruit back in the beginning) but now I am addicted.
Seriously, every night I go to my favorite fruit stand and get a piece of pineapple. It costs 1 yuan (.14 cents) and it is the perfect way to finish off a meal. I don’t know why this isn’t sold in every part of the world. I think the secret is not in the delicious fruit, but in the presentation.
First they peel off the top layer of the skin. Then, with a sharp (usually rusty) knife they carve out all the little eyes in a swirling pattern. So not only is it incredibly juicy and delicious, but fun to look at! Then they cut it into about 6 pieces, insert a stick in and wrap each piece individually in a piece of plastic to keep it clean.
It’s like a juicy, really healthy popsicle. Pineapples are are high in vitamin C, manganese, help reduce inflammation, and aid with digestion. I just hope that pineapple season lasts the whole summer. Although I have seen some fruit shops start putting out sections of watermelon…
