Because I’m chicken-with-the-head-cut-off crazy busy these days I don’t have time to write my long-winded blog posts. (And maybe that’s a good thing.)
So I’ll just share brief moments, something funny or interesting, that happens to me in my daily life.
The first brief moment happened in the classroom. I’m teaching a new class Oral English and one of my favorite assignments is a 2-minute presentation on a famous person or thing with their english name. In this particular class, students are names Orange, Pencil, Viborah and Seven so I got a few very unique presentations. Students could just talk, or show a PPT, or pictures or anything. But they needed to speak for 2 minutes. Which I timed on a stop watch.
Most went way, way over. In fact, only one went under time. A boy named Sunny.
“There is no famous person names Sunny,” he started.
“Not true!” I said. “There is a very famous person called Sonny and Cher. Did you use Google?” (Most students use the chinese search engine Baidu, but I told them Google would be better for this lesson.)
“No,” he said. “But to me Sunny is a good name because…” and we went off for about 1 minute about how Sunny is a good name.
“Thank you,” he said almost running back to his seat.
“No, no, no,” I said stopping him. “You still have 1 minute left.”
“What should I say?” he asked looking at me imploringly.
“It’s up to you. You need to talk for 1 more minute.”
He thought for a moment then said, “Sunny days are really nice and my name is nice like a sunny day. People feel happy during sunny days and is that enough?”
“20 more seconds,” I told him.
He took to the podium immediately. “I hate my name Sunny. I used to like it but now I hate it. It’s stupid and annoying,” at which point the whole class burst out laughing.
“Okay,” I said laughing too. “Go sit down.”

A sunny presentation, all things considered. Not bad, your students are getting along. Have a sunny day yourself! Love from Bolehland.
